Hands down, one of the best performances I've seen all year was Spiritualized at the Vista Theatre last night. Jason Pierce, accompanied by an orchestra and backup singers, performed many Spiritualized classics, like "Stop Your Crying" (above) and then some - from Spacemen 3's "Walking with Jesus" to Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You In The End." Unbelievable.

Redd Kross have aged considerably since the performance above (I was but a sperm at that point), but dudes still came out and brought it to the Echo Plex. Frankly, I was surprised by the McDonald brothers' intensity and excitement, half expecting a group of bitter, aged musicians playing for a paycheck. Of course not!

The Kross seemingly traveled across their entire catalogue and back to the crowd's delight, meanwhile leaving out a crucial So Fresh, So Cold jam, "Solid Gold," off Born Innocent, but I ain't mad at 'em.

During my Weekend of Firsts (first weekend of my 'adulthood,' first weekend in my new apartment), I headed to the Silent Movie Theatre on Saturday for a screening of cult horror flick, The Creature with the Atom Brain, introduced by none other than superfan Roky Erickson. Other than bellowing "Hello Big City!" Roky didn't say much, but I enjoyed the film and Roky's presence. Above is Erickson performing his song by the same name - think he was influenced much by the film?

Apparently, the film is also available on NetFlix (according to my brand new account), for all you NetFlix fiends.

And thanks to Sammy over at FAMILY for bringing the theatre back. It looks great! I'll definitely be back for future evenings at the theatre.

After suffering a massive heart attack last week, Big Moe passed away. Sadly, Moe isn't the first member of Screwed Up Click to pass in recent years, but his death, as I understand it, marks a breaking point in Houston culture - fans and artists alike are swearing off lean, the mixture of codeine cough syrup and soda that contributed to the rise and eventual legacy of underground rap in Houston, along with the subsequent deaths of Big Moe and other artists from the underground.

So Matzah and I have been talking about the "bedroom label" quite a bit and since he's busy putting out his own records and getting ready to go to new york, I thought I'd tell you about a small label based in the big apple.

Achord Recordings: So I found out about this label when I went home to rhode island this summer to spend a week with my parents. So I drove up to boston to see my old employer and good friend p.david white. He owns Analog Keys , an analog synth repair/dealership/antique store. So I bought a synth and we went out to eat. When we got back to the shop he handed my a package that was from Brendan Ford.

Brendan Ford and I went to highschool together. We played music together in the jazz combo and he hipped me to zappa and tubeway army and all sorts of good stuff. He went on to Ithaca College and with a bunch of other dudes from westborough mass got a little collective going.

In the package was the We Are The Arm "Cares 7inch . It was put out by Achord Recordings, So I looked them up to find a cool labely consisting of Seth Olinsky (akron/family), Butane Variations, We Are The Arm and Phil Weinrobe.

I also knew Phil Weinrobe (pictured above) in highschool through playing in bands, anyway..he has this great group called Butane Variations which is some where between Simon and Garfunkel, Jim O'rouke, and Sun Volt. The song "goldie hawn" cleverly shrugs some political humor with "George Washington you better wash your hands they're stained, and can you taste your wooden teeth?"
so check it out, maybe you'll like it.

We Are The Arm....is Ford's band.....just listen to it, spazz controlled jazz to the max. Think deep you can find it....fast breaks, soft bongos, neat plaza's, romance.

Mayhem ensued in Echo Park two weeks ago, as Fuck Yeah Fest was in full effect.

Entrance played and I must admit, I left pleasantly surprised.

Mallory, Greg, and I headed downtown yesterday afternoon for the Tofu Fest, where we enjoyed tofu and non tofu dishes alike. With Tofu Pad Thai and Barley Tea in my stomach, as well Tofu with Artichokes and Lentils (that I'd much prefer to forget about), we spent a considerable amount of idle time in the car, circling around the hot mess that is Sunset Junction to narrow in on parking for the Fur Festival. Far deserving of our parking spot, we trekked to the Gallery.

Just in time for Abe Vigoda.

Kudos to Bun B and Pimp C on their first #1 chart topper in their many years as UGK. The record is not meant to be slept on by any means. It's chalk full of anthems, like "Two Types of Bitches," "Tell Me How Ya Feel," and "International Player's Anthem" (a longtime favorite of yrs truly.)

When I asked Bun at the Zune jammer why Jive pushed the album the entire summer, Bun calmly replied that it was UGK's decision in the interest of releasing the best album possible. Sounds like someone's rippin' from the "Detox" and "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2" playbooks, huh? Hopefully Dr. Dre and Raekwon are as fortunate.

I've been writing for the LA Record for several years now and to this day, am still impressed that the Record thrives between Chris, Sean, and Charlie. When you pick up an LA Record from Long Beach to Hollywood, you don't notice the amount of hard work that goes into it. Between the deadlines, the printing, and distribution, the success of the LA Record is no small task!

Better still, Darker My Love will emerge from the studio (dudes have been working hard!) to perform tonight. I haven't seen Dead Meadow in about 6 months and I'm stoked! You don't want to miss this.

I made the long pilgrimage Saturday to the Urban Outfitters in Santa Monica for Sonic Youth (after losing out on Sonic Youth and Red Cross at the Greek the night before.)

Dntel opened, what a snooze.

Lee played his guitar with a screwdriver and violin bow.

And Thurston used a drumstick.

Kim Gordon palmed my forehead. Really.

They played "Incinerater," "What's Your Rupture?," "Skiptracer," "Reena" and a few other songs.

Sonic Youth were totally rad. Urban Outfitters and Yaris, not so much. At least the money went to KXLU!

Then, Mallory, Greg, and I headed to the Smell and caught the tail end of the Softboiled Eggies set. Missing their guitarist, the Eggies ruled nevertheless.

As you may recall, I've experienced several less than pleasurable performances from artists late and great. Os Mutantes' performance Friday night at the El Rey was a shining example of a band far capable of performing their songs over thirty years later, without seeming consumed by age or their legacy. Energetic and humble, Os Mutantes took the stage flanked by backups singers, percussionists, and Brazilian sound wizards.

Os Mutantes performed old jams, like "Technicolor."

And "Panis Et Circenses."

And "Bat Macumba."

Oh, can't forget "Balada Do Luoco." It's as if John Lennon made a record in Brazil, post "Sargent Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band."

Os Mutantes' performance was well received by all; everyone left with smiles on their faces, myself included!

When the time came for a well deserved bow, Arnaldo Dias gratefully performed push ups for the crowd, an obvious show of his energy and excitement.

Saigon's no stranger to label woes and suited out CEOs, watching his debut album gather dust on the shelves of Craig Kallman's office at Atlantic. Attributed to sample clearance problems, the entirety of "The Greatest Story Never Told" was held back by one song, "C'Mon Baby," a supposed jammer with Just Blaze and Swizz Beatz. When Saigon publicly aired his frustrations with Atlantic recently, the execs suddenly scrambled to expedite the clearance process. A week and a half later, the song was cleared and "The Greatest Story Never Told" takes another step forward.

"C'Mon Baby" is now the first single off "The Greatest Story Never Told" and I'm way into it. Better yet, I hear Old Hov hops on the remix, which should leak soon enough.

After work, we (Maia and I) headed to Zune's "Live at the BBQ" event at LA Historic Park (huh?) for UGK and Common.

Surrounded by cars, we crept all the way to the park. Maia sang Morrissey songs most of the way.

We arrived and found our way to the main stage where we found Bun B.

And Pimp C.

Collectively known as UGK or the Underground Kingz, from Houston, Texas. Bun B and Pimp C performed the classics, like "Pocket Full of Stones" and new jammers like, "International Player's Anthem."

Afterwards, dinner - Cole slaw, grilled vegetables, rice, beans, and cornbread. And Red Stripe.

Then, I saw Bun B.

Being offered a free ticket for Klaxons at the El Rey, I accepted - not for the Klaxons, but to see Fist Fite, who I'd heard good things about and had missed several nights earlier at 6th St. To my disappointment, I arrived at the El Rey just as Fist Fite were finishing their set. Instead, for the relatively brief time I spent wandering the venue, I encountered the following:

1. "New Rave" - a genre dedicated by critics and fans to the headliner, Klaxons. A title so repulsive and meaningless simultaneously. A friend said it best when he asked, "Wasn't this band called Ima Robot?"
2. The singer of Fist Fite offering to start a fight with Kelly Osbourne, who was in attendance, for pleasure's sake.
3. The best music of the night were the tunes in between sets. I heard Moccasin (!!!), Spacemen 3, and Primal Scream, to name a few.
4. Little did I know, the DJ was Travis Keller.

I visited my Dad's gallery for his new show, a collection of drawings from different artists. I discovered some early John Wesley pencil sketches and a remarkable early Alex Ross drawing. Hanging around, I also visited the AMCO gallery for a collection of chilling photographs of the sterilized features of a maximum security prison (including the empty execution chambers.) I highly recommend visiting both shows.

Then, I headed to FAMILY for the reading by Bob Odenkirk and Eric Hoffman. A little short, but worthwhile. Bob Odenkirk was especially funny, playing the extremely insecure balding jock rock comedian.

I ended the night with a veggie burrito from Cactus (on Vine) and a disappointing French horror film called "Them." Really, there are far more uncomftorable thoughts than children wielding knives.

Summertime is official. I sleep with my fan on.

There's a lot of positivity in the air and I dig it.

Next, an instore at FAMILY. Bob Odenkirk, Mat Walsh and Eric Hoffman reading/performing "Comedy By The Numbers." FAMILY rarely disappoints and this looks to be no exception to the rule.

And later that night, Cave Singers, Lightning Dust, and Mr. Free and the Satellite Freakout at 6th St. Gallery. Granted, New Ship events usually start later than promised, which allows you to head over to Fluxco or FAMILY.

So many promising events. Play yr cards right and you might just be able to attend all three.

Wednesday night wasn't a Murder City Night at the Radio Birdman show, like I hoped it would. Instead, I got a healthy dose of old punkers attempting to revisit past glory. And it sucked.

Where to begin? Singer Rob Younger appeared jaded by his many years as a musician, performing Radio Birdman songs with a flagrant, perverted vulnerability. At best, the aged Younger resembled a poor, messy imitation of David Johansen. It was nearly unbearable watching Younger prance onstage.

Guitarists Chris Masuak and Deniz Tek weren't nearly as offensive as Younger was. Their efforts appeared far more subdued, lending little more to the performance than the sound itself. Bummer, huh?

Maybe I'm incorrect, but when facing the late teenage and early years of your adulthood, the creativite mind performs in, like any other time in a person's life, a unique frame of reference. With time, that creativity changes, leaving it's original core hardened by years of growth. The shadows left by bands comprised of young adults, teenagers even, oftentimes can't be performed years later without destroying the ethos of the original band; that goes for bands like the Stooges, Jesus and Mary Chain, Bad Brains, or any other band attempting to return to form today, especially those with new albums. As a youth, how do you expect to excite anyone with your songs twenty, even thirty, years later? I'm certainly not arguing that it's an impossibility - I'm simply pointing out the amount of change and growth involved with the creative mind.

Admittedly, I nearly always reserve some hope within me for bands returned from long ago, lodged somewhere in between my appreciation for the records and the band's dated performances (available thanks to the modern wonder of YouTube.) Almost every time, I leave disappointed (last weekend's HR show was no exception to the rule.) The lesson learned, for me, is to approach each event with a carefully weighed grain of salt. In all honesty, what other approach can remedy you from not feeling totally bummed?

The best part of the night? Someone demanded Radio Birdman play "I'm Stranded." Get it?

Bad Brains' HR performing "Leaving Babylon."

Other than that, last's night's show was a disaster. Below is my review of HR & Dubb Agents for the LA Record:

When you hear rumors of a special Bad Brains performance (at 6th St. Warehouse, no less!), your interest perks. All validity of the rumors aside, you imagine, briefly, Bad Brains in their element. And then you have to go, if not out of sheer curiosity, but to fulfill the subconscious void in your head where Bad Brains should be. I should've known the rumors were false (truth be told, I expected a compromise, at worst.) That compromise? HR and Dubb Agents. HR's Dubb Agents, I'd like to mention, were seemingly hand picked from the shores of Santa Cruz - cargo shorts, flip flops, backwards trucker hats, the works (sans ten foot bong, surprisingly.) HR, meanwhile, lazily sat onstage in a leather office swivel chair, calmly packing away his guitar with a full grin, just to open it all over again. Every so often, HR would feel so inclined to stand, only to sing or introduce his songs (few of which were old compositions) as some sort of greater invitation to peace and love and understanding. HR and Dubb Agents were received with mixed reactions, at best, considering the fight that broke out early on, the thinning crowd as the night progressed, and the endless pleas for "Pay To Cum" and other Bad Brains jams. HR's single recognition of his past, to my knowledge, was performing Bad Brains' "Leaving Babylon." Otherwise, I embraced my necessary trips outside, to smoke and digest what it was I was watching. Sadly, Dr. Know, Darryl Jennifer, and Earl Hudson were nowhere to be found - the idea of Bad Brains performing at 6th Street Warehouse were the irrational fantasies of the night's promoters, just as they were mine and many who also attended. HR's snub of Bad Brains tunes, in favor of his own, was an intentional separation from his past, while I clung to it with growing disappointment.

If you can't already tell, it went down. Everyone had fun and Abe Vigoda's crazed, So Cal cowabunga jams entertained. Really, who better to bring the cowbell back than Abe Vigoda?

My only regret? Not being able to check out the work on display given the volume of people attending. There's always tomorrow.

I've found myself consumed lately by the errors of the human way; the impatient motorist who, especially upon my approach, intentionally jeapordizes my safety on my bicycle in the best interest of their time, the incosiderate women littering pages of her magazine as she walks down the street, the racist bicyclist who blames a woman's race for her plain inattention to her surroundings, and most everything discussed in the news. Alone, the forementioned events may seem irrelevent or petty in the greater scheme of humanity. But they're not. They pile upon each other in my subconscious. And I wonder, what compels one to behave against their fellow human with little regard?

I learned a few days ago of the theft at Little Radio (best of all, the crime occured following a free event they'd hosted.) Like the others, it ate away at my confidence in the human existence. Soon after, to my surprise, Little Radio announced that they'd discovered the thief. His name? Richie, from Santa Ana.

Little Radio's public discovery of Richie as their thief serves as another scapegoat to channel my dissapointment with humanity in. Hey, maybe it's not everyone who sucks? Maybe the chosen few, like Richie, bring down the rest of us. Maybe we all bring each other down? I can safely say that I've made choices no better than Richie's and I know I'm not the only one. The single consolation of shitty decisions is the first step set forth, after all is said and done. How will you carry yerself after you've fucked up?

I'm glad Little Radio recovered their belongings and I'm also bummed that, as a result of one man's poor choices, Little Radio will restrict it's outreach to the community.

If Karma truly exists, I hope Richie is fairly compensated for his actions.

Drug Rug

It'd be too easy for me to attribute the way I've been feeling lately as my defining attachment to Drug Rug's "Day I Die" (no emo), but I don't think that's it. Rather, I think I identify with the feel good simplicity the song carries itself with, similar to Beat Happening circa "Black Candy" (with heavier pop overtones, sans Calvin Johnson's calming monotone.) To sum it up, "Day I Die" lyrically holds true to it's morbid name, all the while exuding this unexplainable satisfaction (happy-like, at that.) Who knows? Maybe I've misinterpreted the song in it's entirety (if such a thing even exists?)

I've heard other songs from Cambridge's Drug Rug before, but haven't responded as well as I have to "Day I Die." Give it a listen.

You may have heard some rumors lately about Sea Level. If you have, they're true. If you haven't, well, I've got a little bit of news for you.

After five and a half years, Sea Level will be shutting our doors permanently at the end of June. This was an incredibly tough decision for me to make and one that I've been wrestling with for some time now. While there is no doubt that I believe Sea Level should be around, I'm just not up for running it anymore and, to be honest, I want my life back. It's hard to say it, but I've actually burnt out on what should have been the perfect job. I shouldn't dread going to "work" every day and sadly, that's what it has become for me.

It's been five of the best years of my life and at the same time five of the worst. I've met some of the most amazing people over my time in beautiful Echo Park and am extremely grateful for meeting some customers that I now consider friends! I will miss seeing you "regulars" and can't put into words how much you all have meant to me. You were what kept it, and me, going for as long as it did! You made Sea Level what it was!

We're going out like we came in too, with a party. So mark your calendars for Friday June22nd and plan to be at Safari Sams for a little going away party! (details soon)

Extra thanks go out to Sea Level Sylvia. She probably single handedly kept Sea Level alive an extra year (or two)!

Like I said, "All Things Must Pass" is fragile and unimaginative, loosely held together by little creativity or invention. In all, the ultimate bummer is witnessing the Reid brothers' seeming departure from their former selves (and all the creativity that came with it.)

Whose brilliant idea was it to choose Elijah Wood to play Iggy Pop in the new Stooges biopic, The Passenger?

I'm scratchin' my head here; I doubt Wood is able to present James Osterberg for his eccentricities, flaws, and everything in between - a man scarred by drug and alcohol abuse, lost relationships, and otherwise unmentionable insanity.

Just sayin' - If this movie turns out to be an Elijah Wood sing-a-long to "Fun House," the film will only perpetuate Hollywood's seeming failure to present rock 'n' roll as nothing more than a glamorous circus. Nevermind Pop's supposed blessings over the project; may I painfully remind you of "Skull Ring" and the Stooges 'comeback' record, the Steve Albini produced dissapointment that is, "The Wierdness." Let's face it - change comes with age. Had Sum 41 approached the Stooges thirty years ago about a collaboration, Iggy would've told the Canadian popsters to fuck themselves (assuming the Asheton brothers didn't already beat him to it.) Would a major movie studio be treated any differently?

What I'm asking is, is a major motion picture recreation of Pop's life with the Stooges more likely to glamorize the band's turmoil, with the expected inattention to detail and disregard for substance; or, would the film be more likely to remember the Stooges for who they were and what they did (and nothing more?) The latter rings unlikely to me, but I'm curious what you think.

"This point in time would be the least likely for this kind of thing to happen - they're all very busy at the moment with individual commitments and very full schedules. Having said that, if the organisers of NXNW want to get in touch with an offer, I'd have to put it to the boys."
