RIP ARTHUR

Word has it that Arthur Magazine is no more (the story differs between Jay Babcock and Lime Publishing as to whether Arthur will ever return, but it certainly isn't around for the present moment.) Fortunately, you can share in mourning the loss of Arthur at FAMILY this Thursday at 7:30PM - they're hosting a reception for the now defunct magazine, featuring several writers for the magazine, who plan to share their work with you.

Check the FAMILY blog for details.

Bring 'Em Out

Good vibes all around last night at the opening of FAMILY on Fairfax. Setting up shop in prime territory, Family brings a fantastic selection of books (I browsed through a fresh collection of Krazy Kat cartoon strips), zines, music (Teardrops, Sabbath, Aretha Franklin), and clothing. Me? I'm a little biased, because that's my neighborhood. In a couple blocks, you have Canter's (Jewish Deli, no big deal), Turntable Lab, Supreme, and a slew of other spots worth checking on.

There was a huge turnout last night, which bummed me out only because I wasn't able to browse much. Time permitting, I'll be back there soon enough.

First up, No Age. It is in my humble opinion that Dean and Randy consistently put on a good show. I hear they're releasing several vinyl singles very soon - totally stoked! I shot some video of their performance, which you can view below (you can't miss Dean on drums, homeboy is rapidfire.)

Next up, Lavender Diamond. I love Lavender Diamond. Becky Stark and company, time and time again, make me smile from ear to ear. I highly suggest that you see them. Be on the lookout for their debut full length on Matador.

The best part about it all is, you can visit Family yourself!

Keys Open Doors

Re-Up Gang was in the building last night - Pusha T, Malice, Sandman, Ab-Liva, the whole crew (minus Pharrell.) Again, props to DAY19 for the invite, Jeremy and Claire stick hard to their grind. The scene was set at a warehouse in Hollywood, with posters from every MySpace Secret Show, along with photographs. Thanks to the band on my wrist, I drank Jack and Cokes and PBRs all night long for freeeee, which made things interesting.

Justin and Miles and their Clipse posters. Miles (right) got his signed by Pusha T later that night.

Young Blacklist encouraging you to get sloppy. Watch out for Sean's "Mess With Texas" event at SXSW this year.

Sean explaining to Aaron Farley how he nearly got beaten up for booing the first band, Diamond Nights. To be fair, they were terrible.

To the dismay of the young lady in front of me (who made a point of telling me that the show was about the music, not the camera), I shot some video for you to dig on.

"What Happened to that Boy?"

"Cot Damn" (featuring Ab-Liva)

"Wamp Wamp"

Had a heart-to-heart with Pusha T after the show, though I don't remember much of what was said. I do remember that he didn't seem too happy when I asked how much MySpace paid Clipse to perform. Oh well.

Etch-A-Skizzle

First in a series:

E-40

We Got It For Cheap

First E-40 in Vegas , now Clipse in Hollywood? Read the fine print - a Day19 art exhibit and Clipse under the same roof? MySpace is rollin' deep in blogosphere.

See you there.

Can You Work With That?

Hustled hard this weekend in Vegas.

Originally, the plan was to go to the MySpace Secret Show featuring E-40, Mike Jones, and Lil’ Scrappy, stick around for a minute, and drive home. Instead, here’s what went down.

Made it to Vegas from LA in 5 hours with the homeboy J.Bandler, just in time for the E-40, Lil Scrappy, Mike Jones show at the University Theatre. Much thanks to Jeremy at Day19 for the passes, we got into the show, which was swarming with Warner Bros reps (seriously WBR, we see you.) At the front table, WBR street teamers were handing out “label cleared” DJ Smallz produced Lil’ Flip mixtapes (hmmmm), which I later found out were terrible on the ears.

© DAY19

Mike Jones came up on stage and introduced Lil’ Scrappy, who got up on stage and spit nothing but ZZZZZZZZs (even Mike Jones looked bored.) Scrap and his crew left the stage and Mike Jones (who?) stepped up and performed a couple of songs, old and new. After a minute, Mr. Jones stepped off and then we waited. E-40 was running late, so we sat outside with Turf Talk (E-40’s cousin and protégé) and his Hyphy dancers. There, I met some WBR Urban rep and we talked about the mixtape game and DJ Drama and she admitted Drama’s strong influence in T.I. and Young Jeezy’s success for Warner Brothers, but shrugged off his arrest for piracy (the hypocrisy of it all left a sour taste in my mouth).

© DAY19

Later, some dudes roll up with cases of E-40’s “40 Water,” the hyphy equivalent to 50’s Vitamin Water (I'm told 7-11 will be featuring 40 water soon.) Tried a bottle and it doesn’t taste very good (lots of sugar and syrup, yeuughh.) Finally, E-40 arrived. Small show, small crowd (and not a very enthusiastic one, at that.) 40 seemed to get the crowd movin’, performing all his Yay Area jams. He held it down harder than Mike Jones and Lil’ Scrappy. Let me also say that E-40 is alive and well (though he admitted he was hung over), so don’t believe the hype.

After the show, we snagged those limited silkscreened posters Fader was up on (313/600!) and headed to the MGM Grand for the Vitamin Water Celebrity Poker Tournament. We rolled through, met up with Lara "Got Them Vitaminz" Bandler, who at the time, was with 50 Cent while he was doing an interview.

We walked up and said hello. 50 extended his hand to me (really friendly dude), I shook it and introduced myself. I said “I heard about that beef with Cam’Ron,” to which 50 replied, “It ain’t nothin’. I crush him.” Hung around for a bit longer and watched the Poker tournament, then hit up New York, New York for Time Crisis 3.

Got a call later in the day, telling us we had gotten comp'd at the Wynn. Skipped Dewayne Wade’s party at Mandalay Bay and walked around the casinos. Crashed at the hotel. Left Vegas the next day with a couple cases of Vitamin Water and a fresh perspective.

More pictures coming soon.

(Lavender) Diamonds On My Chain

Attention Party People. Sunday, Sunday Feb. 25 @ FAMILY, Lavender Diamond and No Age will be performing. You don't want to miss this, unless missing things is yer thing.

You should also know that Matador is featuring a song called "Open Your Heart" from Lavender Diamond's upcoming debut full length, "Imagine Our Love" (in stores May 8) and it is oh so fresh. Lavender Diamond can make any thug's heart melt, no homo.

Like Elliot said, I was in Vegas this weekend. Review coming soon.

All Stars

So this weekend me and a friend went over to Matzah's house to watch my boy Dwight Howard get robbed in the dunk contest. Unbeknownst to us, there had been a miscommunication because Matzah had actually driven to Vegas to see the Big Game live. Joke was on him though, cuz that game was totally sold-out, like weeks ago! So while me and my buddy kicked it on Matzah's couch and enjoyed the NBA's annual reenactment of the Biggie/Tupac feud, Matzah was forced to party with celebrities and gamble in luxurious casinos filled to the brim with perfectly legal, well-regulated, and surprisingly affordable prostitutes. After my friend and I had scored fixes for our basketball joneses, we decided to cruise around Matzah's hood and do a little shopping. I made a video:

The Second Coming

Dipset's underboss, Juelz Santana (AYE!), partnered up with Just Blaze and Nike to put together a banger of epic proportions, called "The Second Coming." With the exception of Juelz, JR Writer, and Dipset Eurogang affiliate S.A.S., Dipset's grind is pretty dull. They start trouble with other boring crews (uh, G-Unit?), talk a whole lot, but don't really say all that much. What's beef? Certainly not hacking each other's MySpace profiles and uploading yer latest street videos to YouTube, right?

Point is, Just Blaze is a force to be reckoned with (did anyone catch that Fabolous joint called "Return of the Hustle"?) Homeboy makes everyone else around him sound pretty damn good.

Thanks to Just Blaze TV on YouTube, you can now witness the creative process behind such songs as...

Lessons learned? Orchestra's are fresh.

Abandon Shjip

San Fran's got a heavy physch scene, man. A favorite of mine from up north, Wooden Shjips (yes, that is the correct spelling), are doin' their thing and their doin' it well. March 1st, the Shjips will be doin' their thing with Roky Erickson at the Noise Pop festival in San Francisco and chances are, you've never heard of them.

I discovered Wooden Shjips after reading Jay Hinman's review on Agony Shorthand (RIP) and ordered their first record, the Shrinking Moon For You 10", right away. It arrived in the mail about four days later and I've been stoked on the band ever since. The moment I heard "Shrinking Moon For You", I heard Spacemen 3, Suicide, and lots of other lovely influences and I totally understood what these dudes were going for.

If yer not already impressed by "Shrinking Moon For You," check out the band's video for "Dance, California".

Holy Mountain smartly picked up the Shjips for their first LP, which will be released sometime in 2007. I also hear Sub Pop may be releasing a 7" from the Shjips? Untouchable.

The Other 'Dre

Andre 3000 is finally back on track. He's rappin' again!

If you've heard Rich Boy's "Throw Some Deez (Remix)" or UNK's "Walk It Out (Remix)," you'll agree with me when I say that Andre 3000 holds it down. No word on any upcoming Outkast recordings, but I'm confident that if he sticks to the grind, 'Dre will restore my confidence in what's to come for Outkast.

Thanks to Elliot at Etch-a-Sketchist, I've learned that Andre 3000 stars in his own children's cartoon on Cartoon Network, called "Class of 3000," which puts 50's line of condoms, Diddy's consulting partnership with Burger King, and Hov's own color all to shame. Props to Andre 3000, for always reinventing the hustle.

P-P-Promethazine

Houston's finest, UGK, is back in the building and it's about goddamn time. Jive Records, after delaying one of rap's finest records of 2006, Clipse's "Hell Hath No Fury," over and over again, have fumbled another release, UGK's "Underground Kingz." Since December (as far as I know), Jive has pushed this release several times. No matter - Bun B and the finally freed Pimp C are back and holdin' it down.

Below is the video for the group's first single, "The Game Belongs To Me"

Don't get yer hopes up, but the record supposedly hits stores February 27th.

And here's a little extra somethin'. Off his solo record "Trill," which dropped in '05, Bun B's "Get Throwed" featuring Jeezy, Z-Ro, and UGKer Pimp C. Solid.

Whatcha know 'bout that?

Blank Generation

I don't mean to swagger jack content from Prefix, but they're on that smooth tip today.

As you may or may not know already, Vice Records signed ATL's finest, Black Lips, and shipped 'em off to Tijuana to record a live record. Mayhem ensued and the record was named "Los Valentes Del Mundo Nuevo" (Translation?) Below is a little promo Vice put together to get you shakin'.

And if you haven't already caught the band's video for "Fad," get into it. Cowboys vs. Indians, can't top that!

I saw this band at the Echo recently and I had a great time. In fact, I haven't had that good of a time in some time. Go figure...

What's Yer Scenario?

What yer watching is spankin' new Fall material (new enough for Mark E. Smith to consult his lyrics sheet onstage), courtesy of Prefix Mag. The joint is called "Scenario" and I like it (just don't license it to Mitsubishi, okay?) Props to Rob Barbato and Tim Presley (of Darker My Love fame.)

Here's what you need to know: On March 27, Narnack (what's good, Billy?) will release The Fall's "Reformation."

Get stoked.

More promising than the return of (not so) Young Hov, the LA Record is back. And not only is the LA Record back in business, but they're inviting you to their release party, which sounds oh so very fun (better put yer dancing shoes on.)

Sounds Like a Case of the Moondays

Certainly an entertaining listen, you can catch GTFU Radio every Monday night from 8-11 PST on Little Radio. Imagine sitting around, drinking, smoking the reefer, spinning records, and talking shit in yer parent's basement. Yup, that's what's up.

Might I also mention that GTFU affiliates, Brother Reade, recorded two solid introductions for the show, which you can grab here and here.

Yer welcome.

Eghck!

Word has it that the Thornton brothers, aka Pusha T and Malice, are coming through town (LA, that is) and I couldn't be more excited. Clipse' sophomore release, "Hell Hath No Fury," was a certifiable banger, so for the Re-Up Gang to bring their VA hustle to the west coast makes me very happy.

Right now, you either already know what's good and got yer ticket waiting or yer wondering if the dope boys from VA will hit yer city.

Onto a similar topic of discussion, the homeboy Clinton Sparks features some remixes on his site (off his Shade45/Sirius radio show), which includes the Clipse jam "I'm a D-Boy," with none other than the hyphy one, E-40. Diggin' the Blow intro!

And if you don't know, now you know...

See you at the El Rey!

Grindin'

Nick Cave and (some of) the Bad Seeds are back as Grinderman. I was lucky enough to score a copy (thanks BitTorrent!) of their self titled debut album (out April 10 on Anti) and gave it a listen today (I lost interest in the Superbowl fast.) Not only is the record worth a listen (or two), it sounds like a worthwhile purchase to me. Highlights? "No Pussy Blues," "Depth Charge Ethel," "Love Bomb," and "Honey Bee."

Below is the video for Grinderman's "No Pussy Blues." Any thoughts?

I'll admit, I haven't really dug any post Birthday Party material until now (Question: What ever happened to Nick the Stripper?) I remember when I first listened to "Mutiny Sessions" a few years ago and was blown away by Cave and company. Mutiny Sessions lead me to Prayers On Fire which lead me to Junkyard which lead me to to Hee Haw, which ultimately solidified my appreciation for The Birthday Party. Long after the Birthday Party dissolved, I assumed, after listening to records like "The Boatman's Call" and "Nocturama," that Nick went soft. Apparently, that is not the case.

Viva La Grind!

You Said You Wanted Pop But Instead You Got This

Dig on this (my January jam!)

If yer asking yerself "WTF IS THIS!?!," the answer is Brendan Fowler's (AKA BARR) new single, "This Song Is The Single" (Oedipus.) For the LA crowd, you can grab yer copy (a 7", that is) at Ooga Booga (at least that's where I got my copy.)

BARR's record "Summary" will see the light of day thanks to the fine folks at Kill Rock Stars/5RC on February 20th. Totally stoked!

For those of you that don't know, Mr. Fowler's grind extends far beyond the realm of music - Brendan also co-founded RVCP ANP QUARTERLY, which you can subscribe to now!!!

Better get on it.

Get Hurt

A meeting of the minds, ya dig?

Anyone hear that Ghostface collabo with Brit Amy Winehouse? Catchy, no?
